Design & Permits

With safety and sustainability guiding our operations, our landfills are permitted and designed to minimize liabilities and protect the environment.

Features That Help Us Better Manage Your Waste

Our facility, built to rigorous RCRA standards, is committed to ensuring long-term environmental and community protection while offering extensive liability coverage. Situated over 100 feet of high-density clay, the facility incorporates multiple features aimed at minimizing liability risks. These measures include advanced contamination prevention systems and early contamination detection alerts. Our entire facility is meticulously designed to safely contain waste, ensuring environmental protection for future generations.

Design Features

Enclosed Receiving & Treatment Processes

Our facility’s state-of-the-art waste receiving, stabilization, and containment building fully encloses the waste receiving and treatment process. The space is equipped with a rail spur directly into the facility, and can accept waste via rail or truck. Both the stabilization and treatment processes take place in this fully enclosed building.

Air Pollution Control

Our operations manage emissions through a variety of techniques and our comprehensive air program. At our treatment facility, we utilize an advanced air pollution control system to effectively mitigate external dust emissions. We strictly adhere to the air pollution control regulations mandated by the Ohio EPA and OSHA to ensure compliance and environmental safety.

Double Synthetic Liners

The landfill at our facility features state-of-the-art design elements, including double synthetic liners equipped with leak detection and leachate collection systems. Additionally, the cell cap utilizes clay/HDPE composite systems to effectively prevent infiltration of precipitation. This comprehensive design ensures ongoing leachate removal, ultimately leading to the gradual elimination of liquid within the landfill cell.

Leachate Collection System

The primary leachate collection system efficiently handles precipitation that has percolated through the waste, gathering in designated sumps within the landfill liner. This collected leachate is automatically pumped to maintain less than 1 foot of head on the liner system. Subsequently, it is stored in on-site tanks before being transported off-site for treatment and disposal. The leachate system is safeguarded by geotextile fabric and a 6-inch protective soil layer.

Leak Detection System

Our leak detection system serves as a redundant safeguard to our primary leachate collection system. Any collected leachate is directed to on-site storage tanks before being shipped off-site for treatment and disposal. This system adheres to a Response Action Plan and ensures early detection in the rare event of a facility leak, maintaining our commitment to environmental protection and regulatory compliance.

Groundwater Monitoring Wells

Our facility’s integrated groundwater monitoring program plays a crucial role in assessing the integrity of our waste management units. Developed from extensive hydrogeologic investigations, the program encompasses routine sampling, laboratory analysis, rigorous quality assurance/control measures, statistical analysis, and regulatory reviews. Our monitoring network comprises over 100 wells across three distinct zones:

  • Lacustrine/upper till contact
  • Upper till/lower till contact and sands at the contact
  • Greenfield limestone bedrock (uppermost aquifer at the Facility)
Monitoring in the first two zones exceeds regulatory requirements. This extensive network serves as an advanced early warning system, reinforcing our commitment to safeguarding human health and the environment.

Facility Permitting

We understand the essential regulatory requirements and have permits in place to operate our facility as well as handle all accepted wastes. We proudly operate our hazardous waste landfill facility under comprehensive federal and state permits. The facility holds a joint RCRA Part B Permit from U.S. EPA (federal) and Ohio EPA (state), ensuring compliance with both national and Ohio waste management standards. These permits collectively authorize Envirosafe Services of Ohio, Inc. to safely manage and dispose of a wide range of hazardous wastes, adhering to the highest environmental and safety standards.

Landfill Permits Include:

  • RCRA Part B
  • Air – PTIO
  • DOT – Transportation
  • NPDES

Copies of our permits for this facility can be found in the facility’s audit pack.
